Step 3: Design

Based on the specifications developed for the site, a website script will be developed. This script will be developed by the client and/or University Relations depending on what is agreed upon.

It will contain all of the text on the site, as well as an indication of the graphic elements and links. The client will have an opportunity to review, comment on, and approve the script.

During this process, a graphic designer will create visual layouts of the home page and, depending on the scope of the project, lower level pages. The client will have an opportunity to review, comment on, and approve these documents before design continues.

Preliminary Creative Planning

  • Firm up creative/visual approach with designer and production manager, taking into consideration client budget, expectations, and requirements.

Art/Design

  • Develop image list with designer.
  • Determine source of images (from client, UR archives, stock photos, original photography, stock or original illustrations).
  • Create design comps (one or more proposals if appropriate). Do so with outline or preliminary manuscript if possible.
  • Share comps with art director, assistant director, web, editorial director and senior director before presentation to client.
  • Present comp to client with designer.
  • Approval/Selection of comp by client (do comp revisions if necessary).

Editorial

  • Develop manuscript.
  • Review and edit manuscript.
  • Return manuscript to client for review.
  • During manuscript development, begin gathering/planning imagery.
  • Begin photo shoots for all original images or purchase stock (ongoing).
  • Approval of manuscript by client (do revisions if necessary).
  • You may proofread at manuscript, as well as at different points during website developments. For others, you may wait until the site is approved by the client and proofread prior to launching. Discuss with your supervisor if you are not sure when proofreading should be done.
  • Notes:
    • If using original photography, formulate original photography shot list and begin planning photo shoot logistics.
    • If using original illustration, you and designer (or designer alone) will meet with illustrator and get rough sketches.
    • If using stock illustration or photography, designer will do photo research.
    • If using UR archived images, contact photo archivist with photo list.Proofreading should always be done on websites in development, but when this occurs depends on the project.

Technical Design

  • Research upcoming technical issues.
  • Set up database structure (if necessary). Prepare final production schedule. Share with rest of team first, and then share with client.
