Editorial Style and Proofreading

Like all our projects, Rutgers Magazine follows Rutgers Editorial Style Guide.

The Magazine goes through a substantive proofreading process, as outlined below.

Manuscript

  • Proofread word for word (spelling, grammar, etc.)
  • Make editorial comments, as needed
  • Fact check manuscript (use any back up materials provided, reputable internet sources)
  • Mark any queries, as needed
  • Highlight website url’s and phone numbers and check them
  • Fact checking does not pertain to any articles in Alumni Notes or Class Notes

Comp

  • Proofread word for word
  • Check that any queries have been addressed. Follow up with David Major (Magazine editor) if necessary
  • Check that all changes from manuscript have been made
  • Flag any new text that has been added and fact check

Initial Proofs

  • Proofread word for word
  • Mark bad breaks (widows, etc.)
  • Check running heads, footers, folios
  • Check that all changes from comp have been made
  • Flag any new text (including photo captions and photography credits) that has been added and fact check

Later Proofs

  • Check changes
  • Reread any paragraph where a change has occurred to ensure change did not introduce a bad break or other error

Complete Sets

  • Review cover text and table of contents against stories for accuracy
  • Ensure any cross references are accurate

Printer’s Page Proofs

  • Check that every page is present and in the correct order
  • If there were any last minute changes to the complete sets, make sure changed pages are there
  • Check table of contents against stories
  • Scan pages (text, images, color) for any problems
